•Historically, the development of the periodic table was based on the classification of elements according to their chemical and physical properties.
Major contributors to the development of the periodic table are:
•Antoine Lavoisier
•Jons Jakob Berzelius
•Johann Dobereiner
•John Newlands
•Lothar Meyer
•Dmitri Mendeleev
•William Ramsay
•Glenn Seaborg

Dimitri Mendeleev
•In the mid 1800s Dimitri Mendeleev noted that the chemical properties of elements varied periodically with their atomic masses.
•He organised all the known elements in order of increasing mass, starting a new horizontal row (period) so that elements with similar chemical properties appeared under each other in vertical groups.
•He left gaps for undiscovered elements and was able to predict their properties from the trend in properties of the known elements.
