Naming organic compounds (IUPAC method)
.Identify the longest chain that includes a double or triple bond.
.Number the chain from the end that contains the double or triple bonds.
.Name using the alkyl group naming system.
.Identify the position of the double or triple bond by the number of the first carbon atom on the bond. Use the suffix- ene for a double bond eg. Hex-2-ene or the suffix –yne for a triple bond. Eg. Hex-2-yne.
.List the number and position of each of the alkyl groups a the beginning of the compound’s name in alphabetical order.
.Use the prefixes- di, tri, tetra for multiple side chains.
